Wrångebäck is Sweden's oldest cheese, and has been produced on the 8,800-hectare Almnäs Bruk farm since 1225. The cheese was officially registered in the 1880s, making it the first registered Scandinavian cheese brand. After World War II, cheese production at the farm ceased, but in 2008, one of the original Wrångebäck makers, Hans Stiller, who was already 82 years old at the time, helped the dairy revive the cheese. Read more about the history of Wrångebäck.

Wrångebäck is the first cheese in the Nordic countries to be granted PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) status.

This unique cheese is perhaps a cross between an alpine cheese and a cheddar. The flavor is deep and rich, with dark toffee and a strong creaminess that comes from the cheese's long 15-month maturation. The texture is dense and very flaky, with a slightly crunchy "salt crystals".
