MEET THE PRODUCER
Herkkujustola – a pioneer of Finnish artisan cheese from Sastamala
Herkkujustola is a family business based in Sastamala, founded in 2002, and has become one of the most well-known artisan cheese factories in Finland. Its roots are firmly rooted in Finnish rural culture, but it also boldly draws inspiration from international cheese traditions. All of Herkkujustola's cheeses are made from Finnish milk, which comes from farms in the surrounding area.
At the heart of the company is Swiss-born cheese master Peter Dörig , who has brought with him the long tradition of cheesemaking from the Alpine countries and applied it to Finnish raw materials. Dörig's hands create cheeses that combine Swiss precision and Finnish purity - resulting in taste experiences that stand up to comparison even in international arenas.
The delicatessen combines traditional country-style production and careful maturation with bold flavor combinations. The selection includes award-winning blue cheeses as well as innovative new products, such as Stout Vilho – a beer-matured cheese – and Marble Cheese , which gets its beautiful gray speckled pattern and deeper flavor from ash.
The delicatessen has won numerous awards in domestic and international competitions. Its philosophy is simple: to produce high-quality Finnish artisan cheeses that are both traditional and surprising. Each cheese matures at its own pace and acquires a unique flavor profile – this is what makes the delicatessen one of Finland's most beloved cheese houses.
